Introduction

In its electronic invoicing and invoice workflow automation surveys, PayStream Advisors polled a group of higher education executives and compared the findings with results from other industries and previous surveys. The 2014 survey revealed

that by some measures, institutions of higher education are ahead of other industry sectors in automating processes. However, in many other areas, they lag behind in their implementation of automated Accounts Payable (AP) solutions,
which this report refers to as “higher education ePayables.” Specifically, colleges and universities:
  • Are more likely than companies in other industries to have a centralized
  • payment department.
  • Are less likely than other industry sectors to say that they are “innovators” in
  • using payables automation.
  • Still continue to receive a vast majority of invoices on paper. As such, they
  • receive a low amount of electronic invoices compared to other industry
  • sectors.
  • Typically pay less than half of their vendors through electronic means.
  • Consider the biggest impediments to moving from paper-based to electronic
  • processes to be gaining supplier adoption and integrating with in-house
  • technologies.
The results of this survey suggest that colleges and universities are not taking full advantage of the time- and money-saving opportunities that automated payment solutions present. It also suggests that financial offices could benefit from more
education on the advantages of these solutions, which include saving money, reducing errors, and increasing visibility into spend. This report will help higher education institutions understand the state of ePayments in 2014, and it will provide a roadmap for higher education administrative professionals to choose and implement a solution that delivers
