Meet the 2014 Innovate Award Winners

At every Summit, PayStream Advisors has the pleasure of recognizing the year’s stand-out innovators in the field of AP and P2P automation. We BxHE9jVCEAAzabY.jpg largehighlight these leaders by giving out PayStream Innovate Awards, and the awards ceremony is one of the most important parts of the conference proceedings. For those who missed this presentation, here is a review of the dynamic P2P players that caught our attention and earned a 2014 Innovate Award.

Each year, we are amazed at the improvement in financial automation and at the success stories we witness throughout the financial software market—this year has been no exception. PayStream and the PayStream Advisory Board determines the winners of the Innovate Awards by taking a close look at both dynamic P2P solution providers and at organizations that have used P2P solutions dynamically. Among the solution providers, we separate the winners into three categories: AP Technology of the Year, Procurement Technology Year, and P2P Technology of the Year. These categories not only reflect the core themes of the Summit, but they are also representative of the cornerstones upon which PayStream’s research rests.

This year’s winner in the AP Technology Award was NVoicePay. Their ePayment Solution, AP Gateway, was the special component in their recent business movements and offerings that earned them the nomination and win. This product is remarkable for its flexible and simple design, its smooth workflow and vendor management capabilities, and its overall success in eliminating paper checks and creating savings for business. NVoicePay was a strong presence at the INNOVATE 2014, and PayStream believes they thoroughly earned this recognition.

Coupa was the winner of the Procurement Technology Award based on their remarkable purchasing solution, the Spend Optimization Platform. The Platform is robust, collaborative, and highly customizable—the perfect combination of attributes for an innovative eProcurement software. Also a strong presence at INNOVATE, Coupa has been drawing a lot of recent attention to their impressive company success and to the undeniable value of their software.

A summary of the previous two awards, the P2P Technology Award reflects the optimization possible in modern financial technology. SciQuest stood out to PayStream in this category, in large part because of their holistic approach to business process automation. The SciQuest Spend Management Suite reflects a profound focus on integration, synchronization, and accessibility that makes this product a shining example of P2P innovation.

PayStream also gives Excellence in AP Awards to a handful of organizations that have utilized a financial solution in a dynamic and collaborative way. The American Red Cross and Senior Director of Finance Business Support, Michael Harris, were first recognized for their impressive work in centralizing their shared services center, and in automating their AP and procurement process. In that same field of humanitarian work, the Canadian Blood Services and Linda Dyck earned an award for their work bringing better control and transparency to their invoice process and revitalizing their entire AP.

Along the lines of manufacturing, PayStream recognized Archer Daniels Midland and Suzanne LeoPoldi-Nichols, who employed an automations system to improve their AP transaction efficiency and optimize and expand their extensive global supplier base. The final company to receive the Excellence in AP award was GAF and Patricia Hutton. Their company used an integrated PO and invoice automation solution to free up their procurement department for more strategic activities, to enforce compliance, and to maximize spend.

PayStream enjoys this opportunity to give a physical memento to some of the solution providers we work with throughout the year and to some of the organizations that inspire us. Once again, congratulations to all the winners of the 2014 Innovate Awards. We look forward to seeing the great things you will do next in P2P success.

Coupa Conquers Second Quarter

unnamedIn San Antonio, Texas, this September, PayStream Advisors will be holding the annual Summit conference, INNOVATE 2014. There are several things about this event that PayStream is excited about—besides the amazing city itself and besides the inspiring stories of P2P success and innovation that will be shared, there will also be some amazing P2P Innovators in attendance. Some of the best of the best in the AP and P2P automation industry are coming out to personally share their success with Summit attendees, making this not only a vital learning experience for AP and P2P professionals, but also the networking event of the year.

One of the companies who will be attending the Summit is PayStream partner, Coupa Software. Coupa will be an elemental presence among the other Innovators, especially due to their recent movements in the P2P solutions market. While they have always shown innovation and drive in their design, offerings, and customer relationships, last week they announced a new level of success. The company’s Q2 2014 results were filled with big developments and great demonstrations of the extreme effort they have put into improving every coupaarea of their business model over the past year. Some of the greatest achievements were their 100 percent increase in revenue over Q2 2013, and their >99 % subscription renewal rate which created 22 quarters of sequential subscription revenue growth.

Coupa associates the quarter’s success to their collaborative relationships with their clients and their dedication to improving their offerings based on clients’ needs. This attention to customer collaboration is one of the best practices that PayStream has recently seen being used by today’s most successful financial solution providers, and it is no wonder that Coupa is reaping the rewards of this strategy. More than 20 Coupa customers went live during the second quarter in North America, Asia and EMEA, reflecting the rapid deployment and ease-of-use benefits of Coupa’s cloud-based platform, as well as the company’s ability to maintain top-of-class customer success standards along with its scaling global growth.

“Coupa has enjoyed such consistent growth because of the unique partnership we forge with our customers in driving measurable business results,” said Rob Bernshteyn, CEO of Coupa. “We’re deeply proud of our position as the industry’s leader in cloud-based financial applications and extremely thankful to our growing worldwide customer base. Together, we are reimaging our industry and delivering real, measurable business value.”

Their business value can also be seen in their wide array of recent awards and recognitions from several leading analysts firms and publications. Based on the attributes of their Current Offerings and Strategy, Coupa was named a leader in the “The Forrester Wave™: eProcurement Q2 2014” report. They have also been recognized with a number of industry awards including AlwaysOn Global 250, AlwaysOn OnDemand Top 100, and CFO Forum Best Suppliers of 2014. Over the past year, Coupa has made a dynamic partnership with EXL, has gained ‘Built for NetSuite’ verification for their Cloud Procurement and Expense Management solutions, and has released a new application and enhancements to their products. Overall, Coupa has been pushing towards success with determination and drive, and PayStream does not see them slowing down anytime soon.

It is companies like CouRiverwalk01pa that will make INNOVATE 2014 such an important and lasting experience for attendees. Other providers that will be attendance include Ariba, Direct Commerce, ReadSoft, and Tradeshift, and all will have vital things to share, either during the various networking events, workshops, panel discussions, or breakout sessions. We hope that our readers will register for this year’s Summit, held on San Antonio’s beautiful Riverwalk, and take advantage of this opportunity to meet AP and P2P Innovators who are transforming the financial automation market.

Navigating Forrester’s Wave

Forrester Research Inc., has released a new AP solution provider report this week, and PayStream Advisors is proud to see one of our own partners honored with the highest ranking. Coupa, a chief provider of cloud applications for finance, has been recognized as the leader in the “The Forrester Wave™: eProcurement Q2 2014,” namely for their outstanding customer service, their flexible product, and their excellence measured in Requisition-to-Purchase process and Technology. Their standing among their competitors has greatly changed since the Forrester Wave report of 2011, when they had no presence in the race at all.

Forrester Wave™ eProcurement Q2 ‘14

The findings of the report come as no surprise to PayStream Advisors considering Coupa’s success this year thus far, most recently seen in their selection in the AlwaysOn OnDemand Top 100, as well as their decisive new integrations with several cloud-based companies. We expect more great things from Coupa as the year continues, especially in eProcurement.

We’ve seen some great action this year from many of our other partners as well, not to mention fantastic movement in the Wave. Basware has been selected in the 2014 Supply & Demand Chain Executive 100, a position earned in part by their innovative Invoice Automation solutions. The Ariba Network has moved to the HANA in-memory, real-time computing platform to produce overall faster and more reliable solutions. Nipendo is joining forces with Integrate Financial to provide a supply chain finance solution that is tightly integrated with the procure-to-pay process. SciQuest’s quality Spend Management and AP solutions have gained them new contracts with several Canadian universities, widening the company’s client diversity.

All these developments would set our partners ahead in the Forrester Wave, the Gartner Magic Quadrant, or any similar P2P solution analysis, but we believe most firmly in the findings of our very own solutions aptitude measurement tool, the PayStream Navigator. With the Navigator, solutions providers are measured by 18 factors from six categories. The measurement estimates the value of a solution’s functionality within a chosen capability, and the results show a company’s versatility and scope. The Navigator itself is broad, thorough, and trustworthy, a measurement PayStream is confident using in the research and analytics of our AP automation reports, and in the consultation and creation of our vendor RFPs.

The movements of our partners have been bold and innovative in 2014. PayStream is proud to use our Navigator in association with solutions providers like Coupa, Basware, Ariba and others who are doing so much in the AP Automation network.

Coupa Achieves Built for NetSuite Badge

Coupa’s new SuiteApp has earned recognition from the NetSuite developer network as having coupaachieved their “Built for NetSuite” badge. NetSuite has deemed Coupa’s SuiteApp as having met their compliance standards in architecture, development, privacy, and security. Solutions that meet these standards gain confidence among NetSuite users and therefore increase their bottom line.

Coupa’s SuiteApp provides better communication between buyers and suppliers and more efficient management of their transactions. Among other possibilities, Coupa assures tighter bfn-fullbudgets, prioritized audits, and smarter e-procurement.

This is not the first dynamic connection of 2014 for Coupa. In April, Coupa entered into a partnership with Alibaba.com, a cross-border wholesale trade platform. This agreement provided a large new pool of suppliers for Coupa customers, and the benefits of the greater supplier base were already seen among the results of the 2014 first quarter, which showed a 100% year over year growth.

Coupa also attributes some of the Q1 growth to other new company integrations, such as their recent connections with Docusign, Box, and Keboola. These integrations are benefitting Coupa’s solutions in many areas of their cloud applications, creating what seems to be a well-rounded value increase in their global platform. This can be seen in their recent selection as one of the winners of the AlwaysOn OnDemand Top 100. This leading business media band is not the first company to award Coupa in 2014, and judging by Coupa’s aggressive and strategic business improvements, it is probably not the last.

Coupa’s New Features Inspire – Part 2

PayStream Advisors continues our attendance today at the two-day conference hosted by Coupa, a leading provider of cloud-based financial applications, in San Francisco, CA. Raja Hammoud, Coupa’s VP of Product Management, led this morning’s keynote session. She spoke of Coupa’s successes and added functionalities over the past year as well as what’s in store in the coming months. Following Raja’s introductory keynote, Erik Wahl, an author, artist, and entrepreneur gave an incredibly inspiring speech about reawakening your inner creativity and how procurement and finance professionals can use that creativity to break boundaries and revolutionize their industry. Sequence 01.Still006

Raja began her session by telling a story of how one of Coupa’s customers, the Columbian Government, heard of a small village of less than 10,000 people using Coupa’s procurement function to source insurance for their village. They accomplished their goal without any training from Coupa or their government. This stands as a testament of how truly innovative and easy to use Coupa really is. Raja attributed this success to how Coupa’s product strategy rests on three principles: holistic spend capture, delivering user-friendly experiences, and offering comprehensive and organic solutions.

Holistic spend capture is a foundation because you can’t manage what you can’t capture. Delivering user-friendly experiences is how Coupa drives adoption within organizations. By offering consumer-like dashboards and recognizable paradigms within their platform, employees are more likely to use Coupa. Raja said that the moment a software becomes more frustrating or confusing than a traditional paper-based method, that’s the moment adoption ceases. Coupa’s third principle of delivering a comprehensive organic suite is simple. They sought to build a solution from the ground up, not putting together pieces of other applications and rebranding. In doing so, they created an end-to-end solution for the entire spend process covering procurement, expenses, and invoices.

Over the past year Coupa has flushed out their newest functionality, Coupa Procurement. Administrators are able to tag items they want to go to the top of search results when users are sourcing. In this manner, they may suggest items that they’ve found are particularly valuable or cost-effective while still offering choices to the end-user. What’s more, the end-users are able to compare preferred items with others to see if they are satisfactory for their needs. Another feature new to the procurement platform is improved approval workflow by skipping unnecessary approvers when designated by administrators. This was obviously something that Coupa user’s had been asking for—at its announcement, the audience went into a raucous applause.

Raja also announced several product features that are new to Coupa and will be arriving within the next few months. Search optimization dashboards will soon arrive that allow administrators to view search information within their own organization in real time. The benefits to this are plentiful. Increased insight into what top items are being sought after, what items users were unable to find, as well as what searches lead to preferred purchases are just a few.

Sequence 01.Still008Another groundbreaking enhancement comes to the Coupa invoicing platform. Coupa found that AP departments often struggle with invoices that do not have a matching contract or PO; they are then left wondering who should approve such invoices. Now invoices submitted will have an “invoice requester” field allowing suppliers to route the invoice to the appropriate email address.

Perhaps the most highly anticipated and biggest announcement this morning was Coupa’s newest product, Coupa Inventory. Raja explained that through focus groups and customer interaction, her team was finding that it is often critical for organizations that have a large inventory to be able to better manage that inventory and have visibility when purchasing. They found that, particularly in the healthcare and food and beverage industries, organizations were often buying items they already had. Therefore, they sought to create a solution that would eliminate redundant spend. Coupa Inventory also invites an enriched shopping experience by allowing users to see what items are on hand and what items are running low. By carefully monitoring overstocked, understocked, or regularly ordered products, organizations can improve spend optimization and increase revenues. Raja said to expect the rollout of Coupa Inventory in late Q2 2014.

Sequence 01.Still011

Following Raja’s keynote was a powerful and motivating presentation by artist and author, ErikWahl. He told a story of failure and success and of his personal journey in reawakening his inner creativity. Erik polled the audience “Who here can draw?” As you might expect, no one raised their hand. He said that when asking the same question to a group of teenagers, 8-10 percent of the audience would raise their hand. He went on to say that when asking early grade school children, nearly every child raises their hand. Like most, as a child, Erik was taught that being an artist, being creative, or being innovative is something we cannot or should not do. Throughout his adulthood, Erik said that he went from being successful in business to having everything taken away from him in the blink of an eye. It was at that time that Erik began to paint and took the risk of investing everything he had left in himself as a painter. He is now a highly successful artist, author, and motivational speaker because of that risk. See a sample of his paintings below.

Sequence 01.Still015

Sequence 01.Still005

Erik reminded us that to be truly innovative involves ignoring the fear to take risks. He saidthat fear is an acronym meaning False Evidence Appearing Real; that too often we let society tell us that we should follow the status quo and not upset the herd. He likened this mantra to the late Steve Jobs (as well as painted him in less than three minutes, see above). Jobs was repeatedly told that his method of thinking and innovation would never work. I think we all know where those naysayers are today. Like Apple, Coupa continues to reinvent spend optimization with creativity and innovation. To say the least, Erik’s presentation was truly inspiring…wink wink. #coupainspire

Coupa’s Strategic Partnerships Inspire – Part 1

PayStream Advisors is attending a two-day conference hosted by Coupa, a leading provider of cloud-based financial applications, in San Francisco, CA today and tomorrow. This morning’s keynote session was led by Rob Bernshteyn, Coupa’s CEO, and was a powerful story of how Coupa sought to empower procurement and finance professionals to be leaders in their organizations.

Sequence 01.Still005Mr. Bernshteyn explained that businesses are often too focused on revenue and ignore spend as a source of process improvement. Coupa took advantage of that and built their platform to garner real strategic movement in spend optimization. He also remarked that vision and strategy alone are nothing, quoting Henry Ford saying, “Vision without execution is just Hallucination.” He went on to describe the painstaking dedication and effort that went into the execution of Coupa and the company they are today.

The struggles and challenges Coupa faced are common themes among many organizations. True process improvement means more than trying to fix or emulate a potentially broken or convoluted bureaucratic process that may already exist in the company because that is the way it has always been done—it means taking the opportunity to rethink a process; to employ a technology that will actually optimize the way things work within an organization. Mr. Bernshteyn said that stellar AP Managers, Procurement Professionals, and CFOs work as enablers to a company. Often these departments are seen as bureaucratic offices that slow others down—through process improvement these departments can support sales, marketing, customer support and others. Mr. Bernshteyn said that the key to being an enabler is to keep things simple just as Coupa has done with their solution.

Sequence 01.Still004

Mr. Bernshteyn’s motivational speech included the announcement of several strategic partnerships that will further Coupa’s reach, improve their product, and increase customer satisfaction. Teaming up with Alibaba.com, a leading platform for cross-border wholesale trade serving millions of buyers and suppliers around the globe, Coupa now offers its users access to over 2 million suppliers worldwide. With an increase in the supplier network comes an increase in competition and thus a better supplier, product, and experience for Coupa users.

Coupa has also recently partnered with Box, a leading cloud-based content management and file sharing provider. With more and more data being stored on the cloud, Coupa wants to be an early implementer of the functionality before it becomes the status quo. Mr. Bernshteyn also announced Coupa has partnered with DocuSign. DocuSign is a provider of electronic signature technology and Digital Transaction Management services for facilitating electronic exchanges of contracts and signed documents. Incorporating DocuSign technology into the Coupa platform will expedite critical processes that require a genuine and verifiable signature.

Coupa already provides Coupa Analytics that allows users to view reports based on transactions within their platform. Partnering with Keboola, a custom data extraction and mashup company, Coupa is going to expand its analytical capabilities to include the ability to import data from external sources, such as payroll or direct spend data. Doing so will allow users to see what is happening in spend throughout their entire organization.

Mr. Bernshteyn’s final announcement today was that as of last week Coupa is now SAP certified. He ended his keynote address with what he feels differentiates Coupa from their competitors and what continues to lead to success—sticking to spend management. Coupa isn’t hampered by the diversification that may slow some of their competitors down; they aren’t burdened by also offering human capitol management or customer relation management. They’re focus is and will continue to be spend optimization management. Mr. Bernshteyn boasted of now having 423 customers representing 154 countries with support for 20 languages and 148 currencies. He also stated thatSequence 01.Still007Coupa now processes over 500,000 transactions daily with 99.99% uptime that has led to a customer savings of almost 2 billion dollars for its customers.

The partnerships that were announced today will only further increase Coupa’s reach into the global marketplace. PayStream is very excited to see how these relationships flourish and the results they will bring. We hear that, while today brought the announcement of Coupa’s new partnerships, tomorrow will be one of new functionalities and we can’t wait to share with you our experiences. Stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow.
