Meet the 2014 Innovate Award Winners

At every Summit, PayStream Advisors has the pleasure of recognizing the year’s stand-out innovators in the field of AP and P2P automation. We BxHE9jVCEAAzabY.jpg largehighlight these leaders by giving out PayStream Innovate Awards, and the awards ceremony is one of the most important parts of the conference proceedings. For those who missed this presentation, here is a review of the dynamic P2P players that caught our attention and earned a 2014 Innovate Award.

Each year, we are amazed at the improvement in financial automation and at the success stories we witness throughout the financial software market—this year has been no exception. PayStream and the PayStream Advisory Board determines the winners of the Innovate Awards by taking a close look at both dynamic P2P solution providers and at organizations that have used P2P solutions dynamically. Among the solution providers, we separate the winners into three categories: AP Technology of the Year, Procurement Technology Year, and P2P Technology of the Year. These categories not only reflect the core themes of the Summit, but they are also representative of the cornerstones upon which PayStream’s research rests.

This year’s winner in the AP Technology Award was NVoicePay. Their ePayment Solution, AP Gateway, was the special component in their recent business movements and offerings that earned them the nomination and win. This product is remarkable for its flexible and simple design, its smooth workflow and vendor management capabilities, and its overall success in eliminating paper checks and creating savings for business. NVoicePay was a strong presence at the INNOVATE 2014, and PayStream believes they thoroughly earned this recognition.

Coupa was the winner of the Procurement Technology Award based on their remarkable purchasing solution, the Spend Optimization Platform. The Platform is robust, collaborative, and highly customizable—the perfect combination of attributes for an innovative eProcurement software. Also a strong presence at INNOVATE, Coupa has been drawing a lot of recent attention to their impressive company success and to the undeniable value of their software.

A summary of the previous two awards, the P2P Technology Award reflects the optimization possible in modern financial technology. SciQuest stood out to PayStream in this category, in large part because of their holistic approach to business process automation. The SciQuest Spend Management Suite reflects a profound focus on integration, synchronization, and accessibility that makes this product a shining example of P2P innovation.

PayStream also gives Excellence in AP Awards to a handful of organizations that have utilized a financial solution in a dynamic and collaborative way. The American Red Cross and Senior Director of Finance Business Support, Michael Harris, were first recognized for their impressive work in centralizing their shared services center, and in automating their AP and procurement process. In that same field of humanitarian work, the Canadian Blood Services and Linda Dyck earned an award for their work bringing better control and transparency to their invoice process and revitalizing their entire AP.

Along the lines of manufacturing, PayStream recognized Archer Daniels Midland and Suzanne LeoPoldi-Nichols, who employed an automations system to improve their AP transaction efficiency and optimize and expand their extensive global supplier base. The final company to receive the Excellence in AP award was GAF and Patricia Hutton. Their company used an integrated PO and invoice automation solution to free up their procurement department for more strategic activities, to enforce compliance, and to maximize spend.

PayStream enjoys this opportunity to give a physical memento to some of the solution providers we work with throughout the year and to some of the organizations that inspire us. Once again, congratulations to all the winners of the 2014 Innovate Awards. We look forward to seeing the great things you will do next in P2P success.

The INNOVATE 2014 Key Note Speaker: Julian Davis

Next week, PayStream Advisors will be travelling to San Antonio, Texas for our annual Summit, unnamedINNOVATE 2014. We usually stay excited for this conference all year round, and this year has been no exception. With so many dynamic leaders in the financial automation industry present, we are right in our element, and with several business leaders from organizations who have successfully optimized AP and P2P software also in attendance, we are proud of the work that we do providing research for these professionals. Several of those business leaders will be speaking at various breakout sessions and panel discussions throughout our three-day stay on the Riverwalk, and the lessons they have on automating businesses processes successfully will prove to be very valuable—as they have been at every Summit.

Julian Davis headshotThis year, we are especially excited to hear from a business leader who has set himself apart in the realm of P2P Innovation in a unique way. The INNOVATE 2014 Key Note Speaker is Julian Davis, the Director of Supply Chain Management at Service Corporation International (SCI). Mr. Davis has been in key leadership positions at SCI and other companies for 25 years, and his skill and experience were just what was required when SCI decided it was time to revamp their AP and procurement process. Mr. Davis will be sharing the story of that transformation at the Summit, but PayStream was lucky enough to get a small preview of his session.

Service Corp. International, founded in 1962, is North America’s leading SCIprovider of death care products and services. They have over 25,000 employees and operate 1,614 funeral homes and 489 cemeteries in 44 states, 8 Canadian provinces, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. With such a big operation, it became increasingly important to control processes and costs, so in 2009, SCI created a 5-year Roadmap to transform their supply chain. They started seeking solutions to implement in their Procure-to-Pay process that would integrate their purchasing, tax, and payment procedures into one system. The Supply Chain and Accounts Payables teams reviewed multiple vendors and solutions before choosing Coupa to provide their automation software.

Mr. Davis will tell the full story of SCI’s and transformation with Coupa at the Summit, but the thing that truly makes their tale unique is the customer mindset that has driven their every step. According to Mr. Davis, SCI chose to maintain the same customer-service focus they use in their everyday business model throughout the P2P automation conversion. Even though they were changing a back-office procedure that did not affect individual clients as obviously as SCI’s everyday services, the company still chose to focus on the end-results and benefits this process would have for their customers—rather than just company efficiency.

san 1This mindset is unique in the renovation of a P2P process, and one that makes Julian Davis the perfect man for the job of INNOVATE Key Note Speaker; PayStream is very excited to hear more from him. There will be many other inspiring stories of P2P transformation and innovation at the PayStream Summit, as well as various networking events, panel discussions, and breakout sessions that will help financial professionals transform their organizations’ AP and P2P processes. Although the INNOVATE 2014 is less than a week away, it’s not too late to join us for this valuable three-day conference in the beautiful city of San Antonio. Register today!

Peer-to-Peer Travel: Concur and the Big Breakdown

There is a big word that today’s modern traveler dreads to hear when embarking on a journey: breakdown. From a breakdown in a vehicle to a breakdown in communication, this word can put a wrench in an important corporate trip or a well-planned and well-earned vacation. However, in the current world of travel services, a good, hard breakdown is vital when it comes to connectivity barriers.

cn_image_0.size_.airbnb-logo-newThere are two companies in particular that are paying special attention to breaking down connectivity barriers by creating easier access to transportation and accommodation: Airbnb and Uber. In unique ways, they cut out the middle man and allow individuals to directly offer their own space and transport to travelers, creating a peer-to-peer network and eliminating booking companies, reservation fees, and the miscommunication that can come through multiple channels of travel arrangement. Airbnb is an online marketplace for accommodations that allows homeowners to rent out their rooms to travelers. Uber, a transport network company, operates as an alternative to a taxi service— mobile apps connect passengers to drivers of vehicles for hire and ridesharing services.

In a recent webinar focusing on supplier connectivity, PayStream’s Henry Ijams spoke about P2P trends, the biggest of which he said are coming in the form of an innovative use of collaborative paradigms. “P2P managers want to narrow the gap that comes from failed connection and communication between buyers and suppliers,” said Henry. “…They realize the only way to streamline their process is to streamline their connectivity.”

Henry used Uber as an example of a company that was placing uberimportance on a connective strategy. By quickly and easily putting people who need rides in contact with people who have cars, Uber is displacing regular taxi services and transforming the transportation services industry. In the same way, Airbnb creates a peer-to-peer network through their booking service, diminishing the need for hotel rooms, and bringing diversity and personalization to a sometimes lonely travel necessity.

The innovation of these two companies is inspiring, and it comes to no surprise for PayStream to hear of a recent partnership between concurUber, Airbnb, and the leading travel and expense management solutions provider, Concur. With this collaboration, business travelers can use these alternative services to book their trips and complete their expenses without sacrificing accuracy, visibility and manageability. For Airnbn, integration through Concur TripLink will enable employers to gain full visibility into each booking to ensure Duty of Care requirements are met. Uber’s integration with the Concur platform will provide Concur business travelers with the ability to request, ride, pay, and automatically expense their transportation– all from their mobile phone. According to Concur, both of these partnerships will make the benefits of collaborative consumption available to the business world.

Concur’s primary focus in travel and expense management has always been to create the “Perfect Trip”, and they do this by looking for the most innovative ways of streamlining business activity and business spend from anywhere in the world. As the market for travelling services expands and changes, it is only natural that Concur uses their own pioneering drive to follow these changes.

“This new generation of platform partners reflects the transformation taking place for today’s business customer,” said Tim MacDonald, executive vice president at Concur. “By partnering with these innovative companies, we are building a connected platform that radically improves the experience for the business traveler.” Not only is Concur acting as a P2P innovator by embracing and cultivating a peer-to-peer network for business travelers, they are helping to legitimize and strengthen Uber and Airbnb’s alternative services in the corporate travel market as much as in the leisure travel market. “With Airbnb and Uber, we are enabling, in business travel, what consumers already enjoy about collaborative consumption in their leisure. Capturing this spend then gives companies greater real-time transparency into traveler expenditure and itineraries.”

Through these partnerships, Concur is breaking down connectivity barriers between the buyer and supplier and between corporate strategy and modern innovation. This story is inspiring for PayStream and hopefully for any financial professional or business leader looking to take their own organization to the next level in connective collaboration. For more stories of innovative companies like Uber, Airbnb, and Riverwalk01Concur, register for this year’s PayStream Summit conference and take your own journey to San Antonio, Texas. Held on the city’s beautiful and famous Riverwalk, Innovate 2014 will feature two days of insightful and educational sessions with key business leaders who have been pioneers in the field of AP and P2P Innovation.

The Life of the Party? Attendees at PayStream INNOVATE 2013

What makes a great party? Good food helps, but it’s usually the people and sharing that make a party great. This years PayStream INNOVATE: Purchase to Pay Summit was truly memorable because of the wonderful collection of leaders that came together to learn, collaborate and grow. This year’s theme was focused on innovation and attracted more than 170 attendees from all over the globe.

Here’s a few of the takeaways I had from the conference:

Compelling Keynote Sessions

The two keynote sessions really challenged our attendees to think differently about the way they manage their operations.

Opening keynote speaker David Phillips is an Innovation Provocateur and teaches innovation strategies for a living. He kicked off the Summit with the thought-provoking session “Creating an Innovation Culture: It Starts with You!” about how to overcome the barriers to innovation and how to drive change at your organization. The session really seemed to invigorate the audience and set the tone for the entire conference.

Our second keynote speaker was from a practitioner perspective. Kelly Coxon, Director of Procure to Pay at UPMC, stole the show with a session with “Using Simple Metrics and Benchmarking to Drive P2P Process Improvement.” A key message she shared with the audience is that it’s easy to get tunnel vision within your own organization and lose sight of how effective and efficient you are compared to other organizations. Kelly’s session really hit home with the audience and was one of the best received of the conference.

Honoring the Innovators

We believe it’s important to recognize the people and companies who are pushing the envelope in Purchase to Pay, so this year we awarded the practitioners and solution providers who are bringing innovation to the industry.

The practitioner winners:

  • Becky Walkinshaw, Procure to Pay Manager, Ohio State University Medical Center
  • Larry Williams, Global Payment Services Process Owner, Procter & Gamble

The solution provider winners:

  • Ariba for Contract Invoicing solution
  • Tradeshift for Collaborative Workflow solution

Congratulations to all the winners this year!

Valuable Case Studies from Leading P2P Managers

In between keynote sessions and coffee breaks in the exhibit hall, delegates were eager to learn from leading companies during breakout classroom style sessions. P2P leaders shared their successes (and challenges) on topics ranging from electronic invoicing to P-Cards to supplier onboarding. Attendees raved about the new concepts and ideas they were able to adapt and bring home to their own operations. Some of the top rated sessions included:

  •  “The Life of PIE: Payment Intelligence Evolution” presented by Gary Salek Financial Shared Services Manager and Wayne Rosenfeld, Corporate Procurement Manager at Snyder’s Lance
  • The Path to Paperless at Procter & Gamble” presented by Larry Williams, Global Payment Services Process Owner at Procter & Gamble
  • Supplier Risk Management: How Well Do You Know Your Suppliers” presented by Stephanie Matejka, Senior Manager Supply Chain Management at Mayo Clinic

10 Newly Certified Purchase to Pay Professionals

I’m pleased to announce the certification of 10 new P2P Professionals! The members, ranging from organizations such as PNC Bank, Cigna Corporation and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, successfully completed the 6 hour training course and passed the exam. We hope the questions weren’t too difficult! The certification program, known as PayStream’s P2P Academy, was developed to bridge the knowledge gap between payables and procurement.

Leading P2P Solution Providers

The conference would not have been possible without the support of our partners and exhibitors, so I’d like to thank all of them for their support. Tradeshift was the lead partner. Ariba, Direct Commerce, SciQuest and Hubwoo all contributed excellent case studies with their customers. AFI, Basware, Esker, Financial Operations Networks, Fundtech, Global Edge, IOFM, OB10 and Scan One all played key roles as exhibitors.

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in PayStream INNOVATE 2013 to make it such a huge success. We hope to see you again next year!
