The UK’s King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, located in London, is one of Europe’s leading teaching hospitals, specialising in liver disease, neurosciences, haemato oncology and foetal medicine. The Trust’s procurement department influences an annual budget of £120 million, and deals with around 1,500 suppliers each year. An early adopter of the online ordering and materials management systems implemented by the UK National Health Service’s central supply organisation, NHS Supply Chain, the trust had found that these systems addressed only a small proportion of its overall procurement requirement. For everything else, the Trust was forced to rely on a paper requisitioning process that was unwieldy, slow and error-prone.
